Sound: King Original..

Founded by Clifton ‘Wazair’ Carnegie, Errol ‘Frankie’ Carnegie and ‘Reader’ in the early seventies, King Original has been working in roots and culture reggae for the past twenty-five years. In these years we have seen it transform to the quality status it is today where we have managed , produce and promote a list of artists from England and the Caribbean.

The sound has taken it’s music around the World, but it still resides in east London where the King Original crew continue to work on keeping a majestic sound.

In the late seventies the sound started recording with some of Jamaica’s finest roots and reggae artists and was one of the first sounds to start an independent label promoting roots and reggae called ‘Original sound/international’. Under the new label we recorded some of Jamaica’s up and coming stars like ‘Eek-a-mouse’, ‘Lukie-D’, ‘Daddy Freddie’, ‘Sugar Minott’, ‘Frankie Paul’, ‘Pincher and little John.

As Wazair moved on as a producer and musician over seas, the sound recruited a new selector called ‘Bimbo’.

In the early eighties the sound played a big hand in the British reggae movement. It also worked with the best sounds around at the time and became one of the best touring sounds with an international host of artists. We saw out the mid-eighties as one of the top sounds in England.

As the eighties came to an end reggae music evolved to a different level, so too King Original evolved to accommodate the new changes.

Bimbo left the sound and went on to found his own label which he used to produce as himself.

To prepare for the coming of the nineties the sound had to re-group and there was more change as the sound took on another selector- ‘Flaco’. The sound now established in the world of reggae expanded it’s ties and worked with a variety of British acts which include the likes of, Nerious Joseph, Errol Bellot, Colourman, African-Simba, Tony Roots, Hughie Issacher and many more of the British based acts of today. The sound still going on with the same burst of energy it started on, still full of life and love of reggae music was moving to a world wide market.

Ragga became the newest change to the music and King Original sound worked with the pioneers of this creation i.e. Steve Harper, Boogie Mallia, Hift Pint, Pincher, Colourman, Sugar Minott, the youth man promotion crew plus a new group of up and coming acts. These include Shabba Ranks, Buju Banton and Capleton. This led to the sounds change to a roots/reggae/ragga format in the early nineties. The king Original family also grew. Though the sound has seen many changes it has never stopped being the best sound in the east England.

In the mid-nineties the sound along with many artists went back to the roots of reggae music and recorded for the market that it once thrived off.

As it went back to the roots it was known for, the sound was joined by more people that helped to keep the movement alive.

King Original as in the past, toured roots clubs throughout England and Europe.

As Wazair, Kenny and Culture-O move the sound into the new millennium, they are trying to make it accessible to the world and make the music appeal to a wider range of groups. In order to do this they are making the music selection bigger with selectors like jah-t, Jason, Kenny and founding father Wazair playing the music that the crowd wants to hear.

After 25 years it continues to hold the honour of being one of the top sounds world-wide and will continue to uphold it’s title for years to come with new people to take it along. The King Original crew pride themselves as a well managed sound and recording company offering positive artist liaison and management.

To the fans and supporters of King Original world-wide we give thanks.
